help a girl out

I need some recommendations on personal finance programs. I am intrigued by Quicken and would love to find a program that uploads our information from our checking account so that everything is current at all times. Does this exist? Is it possible that a non-techie like me could figure it out? I've lost my checkbook register in the move and I'm realizing that I could do much better if all our finances were on the computer! Advice please! Oh, and can I start this program in the middle of an account or do I need to open a new one with a 'fresh start'?

I'm a big fan of Quicken. We use it to upload all our info, and I find it to be very user friendly.

We have been using YNAB (You Need a Budget) at www.youneedabudget.com
Sounds a little goofy, but it is a pretty nice system. I was looking for the same kind of thing and ran across this. I like the developer's philosophy, and he even has a series of lessons on managing money as well as other helpful info on his website. I thought the price was very reasonable, and it downloaded nicely. The advanced version (for Windows but not for us Mac users) is YNAB Pro, a little more expensive but does import transactions from your bank account - a huge plus, in my opinion! Have never tried Quicken so don't know how to compare it. Good luck!

I use Quicken and have since college. I love it. I balance my checkbook and reconcile on it. Very easy once you get the hang of it.

Crystal and I have tried a million different programs and though I'll have to admit I like the idea of have a program that syncs on line with our bank we've found that for us having a system that we're both committed to and understand was more important than anything. We follow dave Ramsey's Envelope cash management system to the letter and the principles and within 4 years paid off 40k of debt, saved, and have more peace in our finances that ever before and to cap it off....we hand write and balance our stuff. I like computer stuff but we both agree and understand this stuff so in the long run it's a better deal or us. www.fpu.com
All of that being said Quickbooks is pretty cool and they have a great Mac version -Jeremy

We do the Dave thing too with excel on our computer for the house bills that we use our checkbook for. I know we're not the most technically advanced people out there but it works for us.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I found my checkbook register so all is right in the world now! Our family is also on the Dave Ramsey plan (most of the time anyways!) and I have a budget in excel but I don't feel like it's thorough enough. I'm going to research all the options and get something soon!

Hey Natalie, I forgot about this in my last comment I understand the thoroughness you're talking about and I think if we were to take this next step I would highly consider this system. I used a version of this 12 years ago before we were married and loved it. It's online and pretty cool.
