Keri and I took a parenting class at our church called, "The Parent Adventure: Preparing Your Kids for a Life with God". One week we focused on creating a yes home for our kids. Here's a quote from the book:
God has planted gifts in your children. You have the privilege of igniting those gifts through a yes environment. By saying yes to your children when you can, you value their creativity, raise their confidence, and encourage them to explore the passions God has placed in them to carry out the plans He has for their lives.
It's so easy to say no to the small things because we are afraid of the mess, or we don't want to be inconvenienced, or we're embarrassed. But what freedom it gives kids when we say yes. They begin to come up with amazing ideas and aren't afraid to share their ideas or feelings. And we get to stop and see what beautiful, creative, fun children they are! This is something we've been working on in our home recently and here's a little photographic evidence of that we're making great strides! They may seem like small things, but honestly they are things we would have said no to a few months ago. There is nothing wrong with these new things, they just aren't exactly what Keri and I would choose to do. But our kids aren't us and they have their own brilliant ideas. And God made them beautifully and wonderfully. I'm so glad we learned this lesson and have seen our kids (and ourselves) grow in the process.

Natalie, this is SO where I am right now!! I am so burdened for this...my heart breaks every time I say no to my children just because it's something I don't want to do.
The hardest part for me is the dress thing...it's SO HARD for me to let M leave the house in stuff that doesn't match! But she loves it, so I need to focus on that. :)
You inspired me today. This was a horrible day for me mothering-wise, but now I'm geared up to make tomorrow better!
i absolutely love that! i hope i remember that when i have kids of my own. thanks for sharing.
What a precious post! Addie and Doak are so blessed to have parents like you and Keri. Love you all.
Great ideas and we should all say YES more often. I said YES to painting and YES to Moon Sand and YES to making a waterslide in one day yesterday. I didn't even know I was practicing this. Just trying to be a better mommy.
What a great post! Thank you for teaching me the lesson on "yes:.
love it.
so cute!
I LOVE this - it is something I really needed to hear today! And what fun memories you make in the process. thank you for sharing this great wisdom!
Thanks for such an awesome reminder!!! There are SO many times that I say no simply because I don't want to have the mess, or take the time to help, etc. Thanks for inspiring me to work on a "yes" home!!!
I had a dream last night that you moved into our neighborhood and your house was much larger and more beautiful than ours...so I was a little jealous...but I was so excited that the kids could play together and we could go for walks ALL the time! = )
Just thought I would share that with you. Maybe Keri will be applying to coach at Boise State soon???
I love those! What a great idea & inspiration. Saying yes is sometimes hard for us adults. But when else can you do crazy, messy, fun things if not as a child?
